The current Jeffersontown High School succeeded a previous school of the same name in the Jefferson County community which operated from 1925 to 1950. Construction began on this school in 1962 and it opened in 1966. The academic building at Jeffersontown High was dedicated to Samuel G. Boyd, principal of the original Jeffersontown High from 1927 to 1943. The current J-town High adopted the team and mascot name of Chargers.
