This session was great. It really points out the fact that if we work together towards a common goal, we will be more likely to achieve that goal. A library is not static nor should it be confined to a single definition. We cannot do our jobs to the best of our abilities when those with whom we work do not understand what that job is.
I was told by a teacher in my building once, "I want your job. What do I have to do to get it?" I said, "You need a Masters in Library Science." "Oh, I don't want to go back to school, she replied." We are highly trained professionals, often holding multiple college degrees and teaching certifications. I didn't just walk in off the street and say, "I am a librarian." I trained to be one. I work at becoming a better one. I want others to know what I do and moreover respect the contribution I make to the educational environment in my school.
The countdown to the 2010 negotiations of the JCPS contract has started. Where will the word librarian be in that contract? We can't wait to find out, we need to make sure we are part of the process that puts the word librarian and what it means into the contract.
